Dr. Ami Goulden
Individual Therapy | Youth & Adults | Disability & Chronic Illness
PhD, MSW, MA, RSW (she/her)

What I Can Help With
Ami works with adolescents, adults, and families who are navigating disability, neurodivergence, chronic illness, and complex health experiences. Many people come to therapy seeking support around medical or healthcare-related trauma, disability-related stress and burnout, grief and loss, major life transitions, and challenges in relationships or family life. Ami offers both short-term, goal-focused therapy and longer-term support. She provides a non-judgmental, supportive space where care is shaped around what matters most to you. Sessions are available in person in St. John’s and virtually across Newfoundland and Labrador.
My Approach
Ami provides disability- and neuro-affirming therapy using a trauma-informed, collaborative approach, with a strong emphasis on building a trusting and respectful therapeutic relationship. Accessibility and inclusion are central to her work, and she adjusts the pace and focus of therapy to help reduce barriers and better support your needs. Her work is informed by narrative and relational approaches that focus on helping people make sense of their experiences and the stories that have taken shape around their lives. In therapy, she supports reflection, building on existing strengths, and works toward changes that fit each person’s goals. She also draws on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Family Systems, and Solution-Focused approaches.
About Me
Ami is a registered social worker and an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work at Memorial University. She holds a PhD and a Master of Social Work, as well as a Master of Arts in Child and Youth Study. Ami has over a decade of experience working in hospital and rehabilitation settings, including brain injury, pediatric care, and palliative care. Her work has consistently focused on supporting individuals and families through illness, loss, and grief. Alongside her clinical practice, Ami is involved in training and research focused on disability and accessibility. She regularly offers education on anti-ableist and disability-affirming practice. At the heart of her work is a commitment to meeting people with respect, care, and curiosity, and to creating therapy spaces that are accessible, affirming, and responsive to the realities of people’s lives.
