Perinatal Mental Health and Fertility

Fertility Challenges and Loss

Fertility Challenges

Chances are you or someone that you know is struggling with infertility and/or loss. 1 in 6 Canadian couples struggle to conceive, and 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. Unfortunately, to receive In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatments, folks in Newfoundland and Labrador are forced to travel outside of the province. Cycle tracking and preparation, funding, traveling, and being away from home and your support system during an already incredibly stressful time can take a great toll on your mental health and wellbeing. Counselling can provide an opportunity for couples and individuals to discuss emotional difficulties, stress, anxiety, grief, trauma, and loss that they may experience during their fertility journey. Therapy is covered by most insurance companies under clinical counselling or naturopathy.

Postpartum and Perinatal Mental Health

Having a baby can feel wonderful and it can also feel overwhelming and hard. 1 in 7 moms and 1 in 10 dads experience postpartum depression. Symptoms can appear any time during pregnancy and 12 months after childbirth (PSI, 2023). If your mental health is interferring with your ability to care for yourself, your baby, or function in your job, you may benefit from a higher level of clinical treatment for a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder (PMAD). A Certified Perinatal Mental Health (PMH-C) clinician can help expecting and new moms/birthing people who are currently suffering from postpartum depression PPD, postpartum anxiety PPA, postpartum post-traumatic stress disorder PPTSD, postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder PPOCD, bipolar disorder, and/or postpartum psychosis PPP. If perinatal mental health counselling is what you need to feel better, we will work with you to determine whether virtual or in-person is the best option.
